No Passion at Work? Find Purpose Within Your Role
June 5, 2024
Purpose at work matters, and most executives agree, according to research conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services. In the study, 89% of leaders surveyed said, “A strong sense of collective purpose drives employee satisfaction.” Yet only a minority (46%) stated their organization currently runs in a purpose-driven way.
When companies have a clear mission, it can lead to high levels of engagement, high levels of creativity, and the willingness to partner across functional and product boundaries within a company.
You want to find purpose in your work because it can lead to feelings of commitment, passion and excitement about your duties and responsibilities. This may also help align your professional purpose with your personal purpose, which may help you feel more fulfilled. Here are some examples of how purpose in work can benefit employees:

Find meaning, and get motivated.
Strategies for Self-Discovery and Growth
Find purpose in your career, and consider reflecting on your talents and things you’ve committed to improving and developing. Alternatively, if you’re innately good at something, it may make you feel more motivated and engaged to practice this ability.
Consider the following ideas to identify areas where you succeed:
Use strategies that can make your work more engaging. Sometimes, purpose can connect to feelings of enjoyment and pleasure, so consider doing things to make your work environment a more pleasant or entertaining place.

If you’re a content creator..
Leverage every aspect of your written and visual content to speak for yourself on social media. Showcase your contributions, skills, and creative endeavors for different brands. By authentically representing yourself and what you’re building, you can gain significant social media visibility, potentially leading to new opportunities.
The same principle applies if you work at NASA or a recently launched startup. Share your side of the story with the world. Show what your work looks like, your accomplishments, the challenges you face, and your successes.
This approach can help you build an empire or achieve a high-level promotion based on the demand you create for your role.
Work with Passion and Purpose
When you approach your work with a positive attitude and genuine dedication, putting your heart and soul into it, you create the best environment for yourself. You’ll earn respect, financial rewards, value, purpose, and inspiration to keep moving forward.
Here’s a story to illustrate this point (telling you.. blows your mind..!)
A coach once asked a client, “What’s one thing you’re most proud of in your career?” The client replied, “I’m proud to contribute to maintaining our nation’s security. I serve and protect my country. My purpose is to ensure that every product I scrutinize is 100% quality-proof and efficient enough to enable our soldiers to protect us from external threats and invasion.”
Can you guess the client’s role? He’s an embedded testing professional.
This is what motivates him and gives a sense of purpose: service to the nation and national protection. It’s a beautiful reinterpretation of his job! If he had simply seen themselves as a testing professional, their drive would likely be less. He would have viewed the same scenario as routine and boring. But, the fact that he looks at it from an absolutely new angle and a new perspective is what makes him stand apart.
The same goes for you. What is it that drives you, regardless of the struggles? What’s your ultimate goal? Take a moment to reflect on what your purpose is right now.
